There are many problems associated with blocked drains. The most common problems are listed below:
  • Blocked or overflowing drains
  • Root ingress from trees or shrubs
  • Chokes and internal blockages
  • Damaged or collapsed drains
  • Sunken or dropped drain systems
Similarly there can be a variety of reasons why these problems occur and these may include:
  • Fat Encrustation:
Fat and oils from your foods solidify in the drains until nothing can pass.
  • Rough Surfaces / Angles:
The benching to the manhole is rough or the angle of the inlet pipes aren't correct then tissue can adhere,
then build up, and cause blockages.
  • Silt:
Sand, cement and tile grout washed down after building works lay in the bottom of the drain restricting flow - causing build up.
  • Displaced Joints:
If the joints have moved, the step between the sections can hold back solids causing a build up.
  • Radial Cracks / Broken Segments:
Tissue gets caught and this can hold back solids causing a build up.
  • Root Ingress:
If the joints are open or the drains have cracked, roots find their way in.
  • Improper Items:
Such as toilet fresheners, kid's toys or false teeth.
  • Lost Drain Rods:
A drain rod may be the cause of the drain blockage.

Blocked drains can be a real headache; they can cause an awful lot of mess and even more stress. Rather than trying to deal with the problem yourself it is often more advisable to call in an expert. At Tay~Forth our extensive experience of blocked drains more than qualifies us to be able to deal with any drainage problem you might be having and give you peace of mind at all times.
  • Blocked toilets can be as messy as any of the other drainage problems you might experience and there are a variety of reasons for having blocked toilets.
  • Toilets are not designed to cope with large quantities of mass such as nappies, tampon or lots of toilet paper. The system can easily become clogged due to one or more of these.
  • Broken pipes - a slight break in a pipe/drain is enough to cause waste to build up and will most likely repeat itself if the problem is not rectified. Our engineer may recommend a CCTV survey to visibly see the problem and provide viable ways of preventing any further blockages.
  • Lack of maintenance - regularly cleaning, plunging and flushing your toilet will prevent the slow build up of scale and small bits of waste turning into larger problems.
Bigger problems - If more than one fitting (sink, basin, bath, shower) is blocked, the problem may be in the soil stack or main drain. Our engineers will be able to best advise you how to solve this.  Tay~Forth Maintenance is a friendly family-run business which is renowned locally for its fantastic dedication to customer service. • Avoid an overuse of washing powder in your washing machine as this may result in blocked drains
  • Do not flush any improper objects down the toilets which may cause internal blockages - e.g. toilet fresheners, toys etc. and try to keep these items away from the toilet to prevent them accidentally being knocked in
  • Lift drain covers regularly to check that the drains are flowing freely
  • Remove all build up of hair that may get caught in plugholes
  • Regularly clean toilets, baths and sinks with disinfectant
  • Do not flush sanitary waste or nappies down the toilet as these may cause drains to become blocked
